where

  • u is the terminal upward velocity of the inclusion
  • g is 9.81 m s-1
  • d is the inclusion diameter [m]
  • ∂ρ is the difference in densities between the liquid steel and inclusion [kg m-3], and
  • η is the molten steel viscosity [N s m-2]

Everything else being equal, the rate of inclusion flotation is directly proportional to the square of its diameter.
